You're in the study. I'm in the doorway.

Saint Jeannet

Podcasters become podcasters because they’re in deep on their chosen topic. They committed and they did the reading.

And they show up with passion and enthusiasm.

That makes them great podcasters, but it doesn’t mean that they’re great at talking about their podcast.

They might have every intention of marketing their podcast and building their community, but they don’t know how to go about it.

Because what we’re talking about are two different skillsets, and very few people have both. And that’s ok.

You’re in the study because that’s where you do your best work.

And I'm in the doorway.

Living between two cultures changes your perspective.

I’ve been in France for over 10 years now. My language skills have improved, my cultural knowledge has grown, I’ve made friends. I feel like part of the community.

But in other ways, I’m still very British. I’ll take a tea, thanks, with milk. Oh, you heated the milk? That’s ok, I’m too British to send it back.

My translation work means that I mentally hop between languages all the time.

I have the flexibility and the experience to communicate with both cultures.

And that's what I do for podcasters like you too, Reader.

If you’re in the study, I’m in the doorway.

I stand in the doorway that exists between podcasters and their audience, helping the two to connect with each other.

That’s how I like to think of the emails I write for my clients about their podcasts.

I listen to their podcast episode (yes, the whole thing) and take copious notes.

And what I’m listening for isn’t to find out what the episode is about, it’s to pinpoint why a listener would care.

You can tell them everything about the episode, top to bottom, inside out. But when they’re reading the email, they need to know what’s in it for them.

And these two things are not the same.

It might mean that the email I write is based on a statistic you mentioned in the podcast, or an in-joke from the opening section.

Or it may be that I write about your episode’s main topic, but I set the audience up to know that you’re launching a new service and they need to get ready to opt in.

When you created the whole episode from scratch, it's hard to step back and hear it like a listener would. You know the whole topic; you can't pretend that you don't.

You just need to find a way to connect with the people who need to hear your message.

If you need to have better email conversations with your podcast audience, let me create the doorway for you. I’ll open it so you’re free to thrive in your study.

on the same wavelength.

For podcasters, business owners and thought leaders who want to use email to sell, all while connecting meaningfully with their audience. And because we’re more than the businesses we create, I also dive into ideas of community and belonging from my perspective as an introverted but integrated immigrant.
