A podcasting friend asked me recently how to recover after ghosting her email list.
She’d been busy, work got on top of her and she wanted to take some time to focus on her podcast, so her emails had gone onto the back burner.
And the longer the email break went on, the harder it was to get back into it.
She was supposed to be the founder of a community. The cornerstone of that community was her regular email updates.
So what did it say about her that she’d let those emails slide?
It meant she’d lost her email habit.
Before COVID, I never acknowledged the ‘skills’ element of social skills. Going out, talking to people, meeting friends, making plans—it was woven into the fabric of my daily life.
That fabric started to unravel when the world went cold turkey on hanging out.
And honestly, it was a difficult habit to pick up again.
The first time I met up in person with a friend as lockdown restrictions started to ease in late spring 2020, I developed a headache from talking and blisters from wearing shoes.
The feeling of being around another human, swapping lockdown stories and laughing at a respectable 6-foot distance, was so intense that it made my brain throb.
I’d become unused to that level of stimulation. I felt like a caveman with a Game Boy.
I wanted to get back to ‘normal life’, but that normal had begun to feel weird.
So just like my podcasting buddy, I had to work on rebuilding a lost habit.
If you’ve broken your email habit and every draft feels awkward or stilted, you’re not suddenly bad at emails—you’re just out of practice.
You’re looking at your emails through a new angle and that angle isn’t necessarily flattering.
But that doesn’t mean that it’s the truth.
The best approach is to take a deep breath, plough on through and hit send.
And if that advice still isn’t helpful for you, get in touch with me. We’ll talk about your community, your schedule, your needs and how I can write emails you and your audience will love.
You’ll be able to show up for the people who matter in the way you want, without the anxiety.
Don't let that habit slip from your grasp,
